Essential Shed Buying Tips

Why Wood

Why Wood

The advantages of wood sheds versus metal or plastic

Wood is strong and durable with centuries of proven performance. It has unmatched resistance against wind and snow loads. It was used to build your house, so if you want a shed that lasts, it should be made out of wood.

Metal sheds rust. Plastic sheds fade in the sun and warp. Wood stands the test of time and nature. A wooden shed is also easier to make your own. You can paint it any color you want. You can add windows and skylights. You can easily mount shelves and other fixtures on the interior walls. If you want to get organized, a wood shed gives you the adaptability you need for very precise storage or workspace needs. When it comes to harsh weather, wood has several advantages. Our siding will withstand hail. Good luck with that flimsy metal shed in a hailstorm. A good strong wind or heavy snow load can often collapse a metal or plastic shed. A Heartland shed will stand up to extreme wind storms. Extreme heat can fade and in some cases even warp a plastic shed. A wood storage shed can take the heat.

Durability

Durability

Treated wood floors and exterior walls give durability to an Outdoor Shed

Treated shed floors are a must. Any wood in contact with the ground needs to be pressure treated for long term resistance against moisture rot and insect infestation. Heartland Sheds use pressure treated runners and LP ProStruct floor decking.

ProStruct is made using treated wood strand technology for enhanced durability and SmartGuard to resist fungal decay and termite damage. Any part of your shed that is exposed to weather should be treated. All of our sheds are made with LP SmartSide siding and trim. The wood is treated with an advanced formula of adhesive resins, water-resistant waxes and zinc borate, after which a water-resistant, resin-saturated overlay is bonded to the product. The four components protect against water damage, termites and fungal decay. For convenience, SmartSide is factory primed and ready to paint.

What to consider when buying a Wood Shed

Some of the key things to consider when buying a wood storage shed are what architectural style you like, how much space do you need and how you are going to use it. Heartland builds carries classic gable sheds, modern lean-to style sheds, workshop style tack room or ranch sheds, barnstyle gambrel sheds, smaller garden sheds, and even big buildings with 2 floors and up to 6160 cubic feet of storage. The way you plan to use your shed will impact how many square feet of floor space you need and also how you accessorize.

For example, how many shelves might you need, do you need a workbench, do you need windows for additional natural light, or do you need ramps for ATV’s lawn mowers and other large equipment? Two important things to think about are how much space do you need for storage and how much space do you need to work. Also with so many sheds being used for enjoyment today, how much room do you need for your she shed, bar shed or backyard office? The ways a shed can be used today are endless. With some careful consideration upfront you can get exactly the shed you need for the things you love to do.

Decide on a Wood Shed Type

Most people choose their shed type based on personal style preference or to match the architectural style of their home and other buildings on their property. However, various shed types do offer a variety of particular advantages. A gambrel style barn shed, because of the steep slope of the lower portion of the roof, offers considerably more overhead space for needed headroom or additional storage compared to a classic gable style shed.

A ranch style shed is a great option if you plan to do work inside. The position of the door and the additional window for extra light are key features. A modern style shed, beyond its visual appeal, offers a few advantages. Firstly, the higher front, door side, wall height is a plus for ease of access and headroom. Second, is that the modern roof style is very effective at water shedding which prevents pooling of water and moisture damage. Last, but not least, windows on the tall front side wall of the modern shed significantly increases the amount of natural light entering the space.

Assessing Different Wood Shed Styles

What look is your style? Contemporary modern? Traditional Barn style? Or is it a mix of styles — Modern Farmhouse style perhaps? The construction style of your shed and the way you paint and visually accessorize your shed will define its style. Shed style sets a mood for your back yard.

So, what’s perfect for you? More of a high energy, get things done vibe or a casual relax and get in touch with your inner self kind of vibe? A shed is a great tool for self-expression. A shed should reflect the style and talents of its owner and if really done correctly a shed can unleash your talent with the space you need to do your thing.

Wood Shed Accessories to Consider

A shed is more than a building, it’s a tool for getting things done. Set up your wooden backyard shed to help you complete your projects, store your treasures or set the mood for your backyard yoga studio and more. Heartland Sheds come with the critical accessories included with the base models.

For example, shelves, lofts, workbenches and windows. Beyond those we offer additional accessories you can add to your shed to suit your specific needs and wishes. Consider how you will use your shed. Is it for storage or for completing projects? Is it for fun and entertainment, like a bar shed or she shed? For large equipment like lawnmowers or ATVs, you may need ramps for easy entry and exit. It’s amazing what a visual point of focus like a cupola can do for a shed. Something you might want to consider. For the builders, doer and makers among us, an accessory like a skylight can bring in the additional natural light you require and be a great addition to your shed.

Must-Have Wood Shed Features

No wood backyard shed is complete without a place for storage and a place for work. Shelves, lofts and workbenches are all critical elements of a great shed. And only a wooden shed offers unmatched flexibility of customization.

It’s so easy to build a shelf on the wall or add tool hangers for long-handled garden tools or smaller tools like hammers or wrenches. With a few screws and a drill you can quickly alter the interior of your shed. Try doing that with a plastic or metal shed. Light is a very important shed feature. Add windows and skylights to bring in all the light you need to complete projects. That’s the great thing about wood sheds. You can build out your interior to exactly suit your needs, no matter what the intended use of your shed might be. Whether it’s for woodworking, a yoga studio, a she shed, or for storing your camping gear you can set up the interior precisely the way you want it.

Sheds must be painted within 30 days of installation to maintain product warranty. All raw exterior wood must be primed using a quality exterior primer before painting. All factory primed siding and trim must be painted using high-quality exterior 100% acrylic-latex paint (we recommend a satin or semi-gloss finish) to protect your building. The majority of our outdoor sheds can be installed in one day. If you are purchasing a 12’ wide shed, please allow 2 to 3 days for completion.

Leveling blocks are not required in all states/counties, but be sure to check your local requirements. Our sheds are built on 4×4 pressure treated runners. We will use treated leveling materials and shingle shims to level up the floor prior to assembling the shed. If your ground is out of level greater than 6 inches, leveling blocks will be needed.
